A Library in the Middle of a Shopping Mall? A First-Time Guide to Starfield Library at COEX in Seoul

You walk through COEX Mall looking for a store or an exit, and the corridor suddenly opens into a much wider space.

A massive bookshelf rises in front of you, almost reaching the ceiling. Escalators move up and down between the shelves. Below, people tilt their heads back to look up at the books. On the upper level, people stand by the railing, phones in hand, while someone sits on the steps with an open book.

This is where first-time visitors stop.

Is this a library? Can I take a book off the shelf? Where do I buy a ticket? If it's a library, do I have to be quiet?

This is Starfield Library inside COEX Mall in Gangnam, Seoul.

Many people first see it in photos. In those images, it looks like a giant film set. But up close, readers, people waiting for friends, and shoppers resting with their shopping bags beside them all share the same space. What makes it different from an ordinary library is not the height of the shelves alone. Reading is tucked between shopping, walking through the mall, and waiting.

It Looks Like a Photo Spot, but People Read Here

When you step inside, phones catch your eye before the books do.

People pose in front of the shelves, film videos on the escalators, and look down from the upper level. At first glance, the books are the backdrop and the photos are the main event.

Near the shelves, the scene changes. People take books from the nearby shelves and sit down to read. Others flip through magazines. Right beside tourists snapping photos, someone is absorbed in a book.

The library opened in 2017 and has books on the humanities, economics, hobbies, and other subjects. Most are in Korean, but there is also a foreign-language section and international magazines.

People take real books off the shelves, sit down, and read.

Admission Is Free, but the Books Stay Inside

The towering shelves make the space feel like a paid exhibition. You half expect a ticket check or a reservation at the entrance.

Admission is free. No reservation or library card is required.

There is no separate ticket booth or entrance gate. People walk in as if they were passing through another corridor in COEX Mall. A few look around and leave, while others find an open seat and read. Shoppers rest here when their legs get tired.

People take books from the shelves within reach and read them inside the library. Unlike a public library, the books stay inside the building.

The shelves stretch almost to the ceiling. Looking up, you wonder how anyone reaches the books at the top. The books people actually read are on the lower shelves.

The books never leave the building, but you are free to read them there.

This Is Not a Silent Library

The word "library" makes some visitors pause before they enter, unsure whether they should lower their voices.

This is not a quiet reading room where silence is expected.

Footsteps through the mall, the sound of the escalators, and conversations between friends are always part of the space. On days when an author talk or book event takes place in the central area, the space fills with more voices and movement. If you expect to concentrate for hours in complete silence, this is not the place for that kind of quiet.

That does not mean loud voices are normal here. People are reading nearby, so most visitors naturally keep their voices down. It is calmer than a mall corridor and more relaxed than a study room.

Beside someone reading, another person waits for a friend. Nearby, a traveler takes photos. These different activities continue side by side without clashing.

The View from the Upper Level

The bookshelves look even larger when you stand below and look up. From the upper level, you see the stairs, seats, and people moving between the shelves all at once.

As the escalator carries you down, the whole library slowly opens up in front of you. A short video captures this scene better than a single photo.

On weekends or during busy hours, getting the shot you want or finding an empty seat is not always easy. The library is less crowded just after opening on a weekday.

Taking photos is normal here. Blocking the walkway or photographing another visitor at close range is not. Tripods and commercial photography have their own rules.

A Reference Point Inside COEX Mall

Finding your bearings inside COEX Mall is harder than expected on a first visit.

Similar-looking corridors keep going, and signs point in different directions toward the exhibition halls, cinema, aquarium, and subway stations. You enter through Samseong Station, then signs for Bongeunsa Station appear as you walk, leaving you unsure whether you are still going the right way.

The same thing happens in Korea's underground shopping streets, where looking for an exit brings you into the middle of a shopping area.

Starfield Library sits near the center of the mall, and its tall shelves are visible from a distance. More than a tourist attraction, it serves as a useful point of reference when you need to get your bearings again. This is also why many people choose Starfield Library rather than a store as their meeting point at COEX. Anyone who arrives early has books and magazines to browse while waiting.

COEX Mall is accessible from Samseong Station on Line 2 and Bongeunsa Station on Line 9. At Samseong Station, the COEX signs inside the station show the route to the mall. From Bongeunsa Station, Exit 7 leads toward COEX Mall. Construction at Samseong Station affects some exits and connecting routes. Inside the mall, Starfield Library signs on the ceiling and along the corridors point the way. When the tall shelves appear in the distance, you are almost there.

The Seoul and Suwon locations are easy to confuse. Starfield Library at COEX in Gangnam and Starfield Library in Suwon have the same name, but they are in different cities. If you do not check which location appears in a social media photo, you end up heading to the wrong location.

Is Starfield Library Worth Visiting on Its Own?

Honestly, some visitors leave disappointed.

In photos, the enormous shelves fill almost the entire frame. In person, shoppers pass in front of them, and tourists keep stopping to take pictures. If you came expecting to read quietly for hours, the shutter clicks and footsteps are more distracting than expected. On busy days, finding a seat is difficult too.

Most of the books are in Korean. There are foreign-language books and international magazines, but this is not a place people visit just to read in English.

Still, this place works well for some visitors. It suits people who want to see a space surrounded by books in person, enjoy photography or architecture, or need somewhere to sit during a day in Gangnam. On rainy, snowy, very hot, or very cold days, you can spend the rest of the day inside COEX Mall without heading back outside.

COEX Mall also has exhibition halls, a cinema, an aquarium, cafés, and restaurants. Bongeunsa Temple is across the road. Rather than crossing Seoul just for Starfield Library, it works better as part of a day in Gangnam or at COEX.

You do not have to stay long. Some people take a photo in front of the shelves and leave. Others open a magazine while waiting for a friend. Some sit on the steps for a short rest before returning to the shops.

Whether you read, wait for someone, or simply look around and leave, there is no single right way to spend time here.
