Ordering Tteokbokki in Korea: Can Two People Order Just One Dish?

At a tteokbokki restaurant, you may see a menu photo showing a large pot packed with rice cakes.

There are two of you, and one pot already looks like plenty. But when it is time to order, you may hesitate for a second.

"Can we just order one of these, or do we need to order more because there are two of us?"

If the menu says 2인분 (2 servings), the answer is simple: that one menu item already counts as two servings.

The 2 does not mean you need to order two separate dishes. It tells you that the dish itself is sold as two servings.

So if that large pot is listed as 2인분, you do not need to feel awkward about ordering that one dish for two people.

What matters is what the menu actually says: how many servings the dish is sold as, whether there is a minimum order, and whether the restaurant has any separate ordering rules.

Start with the Word 인분

On Korean menus, 인분 (inbun) is used to show how many servings a dish is sold as.

1인분 means 1 serving, and 2인분 means 2 servings.

The important thing to know is that tteokbokki restaurants do not all list portions in the same way.

Some restaurants list one tteokbokki dish as 2인분, meaning that menu item is sold as two servings.

Others show a price for 1인분 but require you to order at least two servings. In that case, you may see wording such as 2인분부터 주문 가능, meaning the minimum order is 2 servings.

These are different ways restaurants can structure their tteokbokki orders, so read the wording on the menu in front of you rather than assuming every restaurant works the same way.

A 1인분 Price Does Not Always Mean You Can Order Just One Serving

This is especially worth checking at 즉석떡볶이 (jeukseok tteokbokki) restaurants, where the tteokbokki is cooked in a pot at your table.

Some restaurants list a price for 1인분 (1 serving) but still require a minimum order of two servings. You may see a note such as 2인분부터 주문 가능, meaning the minimum order is 2 servings.

In that case, 1인분 is the unit used to calculate the price, while 2인분부터 tells you how much you actually need to order.

So if you see a 1인분 price, check whether there is also a minimum-order note nearby.

A 1인 1메뉴 Rule Is a Separate Condition

So far, we have been talking about how many servings of tteokbokki a menu item represents.

A restaurant may also have a separate rule based on the number of people at the table.

For example, you might see 1인 1메뉴, a one-menu-per-person rule, or 인원수대로 주문, meaning you need to order according to the number of diners.

These are different from 2인분. 2인분 tells you how many servings are included in the tteokbokki item, while 1인 1메뉴 is a separate ordering rule set by the restaurant.

So if the menu says 2인분 and there is no separate ordering notice, read it as a two-serving menu item. If the restaurant does display a rule such as 1인 1메뉴 or 인원수대로 주문, follow that rule as well.

You do not need to assume in advance that everyone at the table must order a separate tteokbokki dish. Check the menu and any ordering notices at the restaurant you are in.

If You Are Still Unsure, Ask the Staff

Even after reading the menu, you may still hesitate when it is time to order.

The tteokbokki may look like more than enough for two people, but there might be a small note on the menu you are not sure about, or the ordering rules may simply not be clear.

Instead of guessing, point to the item and ask:

"둘이 이거 하나만 주문해도 돼요?"
"Can we just order this one for the two of us?"

If saying it in Korean feels difficult, just show the Korean sentence on your phone.

This gets directly at the question you actually need answered. You are not asking how large the portion is — you are asking whether the two of you can order just that one item.

If the answer is yes, you can go ahead with that one order. If there is a minimum order or another restaurant-specific rule, the staff can tell you then.

Do You Really Need to Order One Dish Per Person?

Not necessarily. If a dish is listed as 2인분, one order already counts as two servings. If a minimum order or a 1인 1메뉴 rule is posted, check that as well.
